I had the privilege of co-presenting a session at the January training meeting of the Tennessee Association of Chiefs of Police (TACP), along with Chief Steve Isbell of the Dyersburg Police Department. The session was titled “Decision-Making: A Risk Management Case Study.” Law enforcement education, awareness of reasonable actions, sound decision-making, de-escalation and officer wellness are initiatives that Public Entity Partners strongly supports.

De-escalation Techniques and Duty to Intervene courses are encouraged in annual in-service training, and will be required training topics beginning in 2022 through Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Other highly encouraged in-service training topics are part of Governor Lee’s Law Enforcement Partnership Initiative, including Officer Wellness, Public Assembly and Community Interaction, and Designated Community Immersion.

All of these topics are covered as part of Virtual Academy’s online law enforcement training platform. Public Entity Partners provides a supplement that helps offset the cost of Virtual Academy. Any of our members with Law Enforcement Liability coverage are eligible for this benefit.

In this month’s newsletter, you’ll read about our Partnering for Success webinar series, plus find tips for preparing for winter weather, key items to look for in renewal applications, information regarding social media, and an article about employment-related claims.

Safety and risk management are more than just a checklist. They require careful evaluation of your operations and losses to search for ways to safeguard public resources, along with areas for implementing best practices and encouraging safety at every turn.

We want to partner with you as you serve your community.

Stay safe,

Michael G. Fann
