The 2024 Legal & Liability Risk Management Institute’s Police Risk Management Conference is scheduled for April 29 to May 1 at the Drury Plaza Hotel in Franklin. Public Entity Partners is proud to be co-sponsoring this event and encourages all who can attend to register early. This year’s theme is “Putting a Vest on Claims — Litigation — Losses.”

Over the last two decades, law enforcement agencies and individual law enforcement officers in the United States have been the subject of intense public scrutiny. The litigious nature of American society has been a key factor in this scrutiny. The very nature of police work, such as arrests, use of force and high-speed driving pursuits, lends itself to complaints and lawsuits.

To help mitigate the amount of litigation, law enforcement agencies and officers must have a working knowledge of developing laws relating to police liability and discipline. Agencies and officers must be made aware that they may be held accountable for decisions made by a court having jurisdiction over them.

The developing law guides police training, operations, individual conduct and operations. A failure to recognize the importance of this area of the law can lead to serious monetary consequences for law enforcement agencies, individual police officers, supervisors, police executives and insurance providers. In extreme cases, a failure to follow the rules set forth by the courts can result in criminal sanctions.

This conference is not just for law enforcement personnel. It is also beneficial for risk managers, loss control staff, policymakers, elected officials and numerous other municipal employees.
